Building Bridges Between Communities

Connecting resources, reducing waste, and supporting sustainable development in rural Honduras

WHO WE ARE

Berkshire Amistad is a nonprofit organization based in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, dedicated to connecting underutilized resources in the United States with communities in need in rural Honduras.

For nearly five decades, the organization has served as a bridge transforming surplus equipment into meaningful support for communities facing limited access to essential goods and infrastructure.

OUR STORY

The roots of Berkshire Amistad trace back to the late 1970s, growing from a simple but powerful idea: what is no longer needed in one place can become essential in another.

This mission took on new life through the work of Eddie O’Toole, whose experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Guaimaca, Honduras, revealed the profound disparities between communities, and the opportunity to create meaningful change.

What began as a personal commitment evolved into a long-term effort to support communities through resourcefulness, partnership, and persistence. In 2009, O’Toole assumed leadership of Berkshire Amistad, continuing and expanding its mission.

WHERE WE WORK

Berkshire Amistad focuses its efforts in rural Honduras, particularly in the communities of Guaimaca and Intibucá.

In these regions, the organization supports schools, clinics, and community spaces, working alongside local partners to address real and immediate needs.

 WHAT WE DO

Resource Redistribution
We collect and repurpose equipment—such as hospital beds, wheelchairs, and medical supplies—that would otherwise go to waste.

Community Support
We assist schools, clinics, and community initiatives with essential tools and infrastructure.

Humanitarian Logistics
We organize and transport large-scale shipments of donated goods directly to Honduras.

IMPACT & APPROACH

For decades, Berkshire Amistad has transformed underutilized resources into life-changing support for communities in rural Honduras. From medical equipment and school supplies to large-scale infrastructure materials, every item we deliver serves a direct and meaningful purpose.

Our work goes beyond aid—it is a sustainable model that reduces waste in the United States while addressing critical needs abroad. By repurposing usable goods, we not only support communities in Guaimaca and Intibucá, but also contribute to environmental responsibility and global solidarity.

With full control over our logistics and distribution, we ensure that every donation is handled with transparency and reaches the people who need it most.

WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS

Donating to Berkshire Amistad is more than an act of generosity—it is a direct investment in real, measurable impact. Your support helps transport essential supplies, equip clinics, strengthen schools, and improve daily life for families in underserved communities.

At the end of 2025, we successfully delivered a 40-foot container of humanitarian aid to Honduras. Today, we are working to send the next one—expanding our reach and increasing our impact.

Every contribution plays a role in this mission. What may no longer be needed in one place can become essential in another. By supporting Berkshire Amistad, you are helping turn overlooked resources into opportunity, dignity, and hope.
